Dr. A. Darren Sholar
Dr. Darren Sholar was born in Kenansville, NC and grew up in the Pin Hook community of Duplin county. He was taught the value of hard work and Christian values by his parents who were farmers. He attended Chinquapin elementary and graduated from East Duplin High School in 1984. After high school, Dr. Sholar played football at Chowan University where his organic chemistry professor, Phyllis Dewar, set him on the right path for academic success. After graduating Chowan, he transferred to the University of North Carolina where he majored in Biology and graduated in 1988. After graduating from dental school in 1992 from UNC, Dr. Sholar accepted a commission working with the U.S. Public Health service on the Crow Indian reservation. He worked as clinical chief in Lodge Grass, Montana from 1992 to 1996. This was a transformative experience for Dr. Sholar as there were no immediate referrals and he had to treat everything that came into the clinic, no matter how advanced the problem. "The training and practical experience that I received in Lodge Grass made me the dentist that I am today", stated Dr. Sholar. Upon separation from the service, Dr. Sholar opened what would become Southland Dental Care in 1996. Dr. Sholar has maintained his practice since that time. He has continued his education to this day including a 9 month residency with Triangle Implant Institute, fellowship with the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, a 2 week residency with the University of Zurich-Switzerland. Dr. Sholar obtained his IV Sedation Permit form Western Surgical in San Francisco, California in 2018.
Dr. Sholar continues to be passionate about maintaining his knowledge of the latest that dentistry has to offer. Dr. Sholar and his wife, Fran, and their 2 daughters reside in the Pin Hook community where he grew up. Delani and Lt. Jacob Sigworth ,USAF reside in Pensacola, Florida. He attends Shiloh Baptist Church and maintains that his relationship with Jesus Christ is the most important presence in his life. When not working, you will find Dr. Sholar in the woods or on the water chasing something.
Dr. Joell-Kennedy Parker
Dr. Parker is a native of Beulaville and joined Southland Dental Care in October of 2008. She is a 1999 graduate of East Duplin High School. Her educational background consists of a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from East Carolina University, a Doctor of Dental Surgery from Virginia Commonwealth University, and a General Practice Residency from the Brody School of Medicine at ECU. She graduated with Magna Cum Laude honors at ECU and Suma Cum Laude honors at VCU and was selected into the Phi Kappa Upsilon National Dental Honor Society based on academic achievement and the promise of innovation in the dental field. During her residency, Dr. Parker received extensive training in oral surgery practices and managing medically complex patients, specifically those with head & neck cancer and severe heart disease.
Since graduation, Dr. Parker has completed a nine-month dental implant continuum at the Triangle Dental Institute in Durham and has been distinguished as a Fellow in the International Congress of Oral Implantologists. She is currently completing a residency in Dental Sleep Medicine and Oral Appliance Therapy for Sleep Apnea at UNC and is working toward becoming a Diplomate in the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine. Dr. Parker is committed to furthering her education and staying current with techniques, materials, and technology through extensive continuing education throughout the country each year. She has studied occlusion and TMJ under Dr. Pete Dawson of the Dawson Academy in Clearwater Beach, Florida and complex prosthodontics under Dr. Gordon Christenson of Provo, Utah.

Dr. Parker lives in Beulaville and is a busy mom of two beautiful girls named Bella Peach and Ireland Jaimes and a sweet baby boy named Richmond! When not at the office, Dr. Parker enjoys camping with her husband Dr. Jay Parker and singing at area events and churches. She enjoys spending time with her friends, reading Christian inspirational books, and paddleboarding with her family at White Lake. She and her family attend Pathway Church in Beulaville where she works with the youth program.
Tina graduated from East Duplin High School in 1997 and continued her education at Coastal Carolina Community College of Jacksonville, NC where she graduated with a Certificate in Dental Assisting in 1999, and then went on to earn her B.S. degree in Dental Hygiene in 2001.
Its impossible to find a patient of Tina's that doesn't LOVE her! She considers her patients to be friends and family and loves to make them laugh and have an enjoyable experience while in her chair. Tina is very knowledgeable about periodontal disease and is very thorough in her periodontal examinations and treatment. She finds great satisfaction in taking a patient from active periodontal disease to a healthy smile through therapy and education so they can maintain their teeth for as long as possible.
Tina enjoys spending time with her husbnd Chris, son Jordan, and daughter Kinsley. Her hobbies include photography, going to the beach and cheering her kids on at their ball games.
Keri graduated from Nathan-Hale Ray High School of East Haddam, Connecticut in 1987 and continued her education at the University of Rhode Island where she received a B.S. degree in Dental Hygiene in 1992; she gained her experience by practicing dental hygiene in 5 different states, before settling in Wallace in 2000.
Keri is exceptional at educating her patients about their oral health. By staying up to date on current techniques and medications, she is able to customize and recommend the most current and beneficial oral health regimens for each patient. She is extremely thorough and takes pride in making sure her patients leave with a fresh and clean smile!
Keri lives in the River Landing Community of Wallace with her husband Rich and 2 sons Joseph and Colby. In her free time, Keri enjoys spending time with her family and friends, going to Topsail Beach, and watching her sons play sports
Barbara graduated from Wallace-Rose Hill High School in 1970. Barbara is the Office Administrator at Southland Dental Care.
She has 2 children, son Hugh (Daughter-In-Law Abby, 2 sons Holt and Smith) daughter Margie (2 daughters, Carley and Barley). She went to work in the dental field for 7 years before moving to the Mountains of North Carolina in 1990, she lived there for 12 years, working in Real Estate for 8 of those years at Leatherwood Mountains.Barbara finally returned to her home in Wallace in 2002 to be with her family and started working at Southland Dental in 2003. In her free time, Barbara enjoys spending time with her family, travelling, gardening, and her Koi pond.
Wanda graduated from Wallace-Rose Hill High School in 1983 and continued her education at James Sprunt Community College of Kenansville, NC to study Accounting. Wanda is the Front Desk Coordinator/Insurance and Office Manager at Southland Dental Care and has been in the dental field for over 18 years.
Because of her experience, Wanda has a vast knowledge of dental insurance and enjoys using this information to ensure that patients receive the most benefit from their insurace companies, minimizing their out-of-pocket expenses. She will always go the extra mile to fight against insurace claims that are denied to make sure the patients get what they deserve. She really enjoys helping patients find ways to get the care they need with financing options and finding creative ways to break treatment plans into affordable visits! She is currently researching various ways to implement medical insurace billing into our practice so that patients will receive even more insurance benefits when they visit SDC!
Wanda lives in Wallace and has 2 daughters, Beth & Paige. Wanda enjoys watching anything sports related, hanging out with friends, going to the beach, church, shopping & spending time with her family.
Sarah graduated from Pender High School in 1995 and eventually continued her education at Cape Fear Community College of Wilmington, NC in 2001 with a Certificate in Dental Assisting, and also took the DANB to become a Certified Dental Assistant. Sarah went back to college while working at SDC to obtain her Bachelors Degree, which gave her the opportunity to teach the dental specialties at Miller Motte College in 2017.
Sarah is the Radiation officer maintaining safety for employees and patients. Some of Sarah's favorite procedures are assisting in surgery and also root canals. Sarah will always try her best to make you feel comfortable, make you laugh and ease your dental anxiety before you leave the office.
Sarah lives in Willard with her son Blake and fur babies. Sarah enjoys anything that involves her son, especially cheering for him on the soccer field. Sarah and Blake love spending time at beach, lounge in their pooland traveling to different tropical locations.
Karen graduated from Wallace-Rose Hill High School in 1998; she is a lifetime native of Duplin County. She began her journey here at Southland Dental Care in 2009 as a DA II/ OSHA coordinator.
Karen is married with three children, a daughter and twin boys. She has many passions here at SDC. Karen loves to meet and talk with people. Patient care is very important, she will go beyond to see that your care is exceptional. She loves bringing "New Smiles" to all of her patients! Her free time includes being with family, being outdoors, cooking, and relaxing at Topsail Beach.
Wendy received her GED from Brunswick Community College of Leland, NC in 2013 and continued her education at James Sprunt Community College of Kenansville, NC, where she received her Certificate in Phlebotomy in 2014. Wendy wears many hats at Southland Dental Care; she is a DA II/Sterilization Specialist/ Spanish Intepreter. She is now helping patients with their IV sedation to ensure that they are safe and comfortable during their dental procedures.
Wendy has been with our practice for 3 years now. Wendy lives in Wallace with her husband Nelson, daughter Xessenia, and son Hallington. In her free time, Wendy enjoys cooking for her family; spending time with family is very important. She also enjoys shopping and traveling.
