Dr. A. Darren Sholar

Dr. Darren Sholar was born in Kenansville, NC and grew up in the Pin Hook community of Duplin county. He was taught the value of hard work and Christian values by his parents who were farmers. He attended Chinquapin elementary and graduated from East Duplin High School in 1984. After high school, Dr. Sholar played football at Chowan University where his organic chemistry professor, Phyllis Dewar, set him on the right path for academic success. After graduating Chowan, he transferred to the University of North Carolina where he majored in Biology and graduated in 1988. After graduating from dental school in 1992 from UNC, Dr. Sholar accepted a commission working with the U.S. Public Health service on the Crow Indian reservation. He worked as clinical chief in Lodge Grass, Montana from 1992 to 1996. This was a transformative experience for Dr. Sholar as there were no immediate referrals and he had to treat everything that came into the clinic, no matter how advanced the problem. "The training and practical experience that I received in Lodge Grass made me the dentist that I am today", stated Dr. Sholar. Upon separation from the service, Dr. Sholar opened what would become Southland Dental Care in 1996. Dr. Sholar has maintained his practice since that time. He has continued his education to this day including a 9 month residency with Triangle Implant Institute, fellowship with the International Congress of Oral Implantologists, a 2 week residency with the University of Zurich-Switzerland, Gephardt study club of Athens-Georgia, and numerous other continuing education classes around the country.

Dr. Sholar continues to be passionate about maintaining his knowledge of the latest that dentistry has to offer. Dr. Sholar and his wife, Fran, and their 3 daughters reside in the Pin Hook community where he grew up. He attends Shiloh Baptist Church and maintains that his relationship with Jesus Christ is the most important presence in his life. When not working, you will find Dr. Sholar in the woods or on the water chasing something.
