Dr. Darren Sholar

Following high school he continued his education at Chowan University where he was a member of the football team. Dr. Sholar credits his Organic Chemistry professor, Phyllis Dewar, at Chowan to setting him on the path for academic success. Upon graduation at Chowan, Dr. Sholar pursued his higher education at University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill majoring in Biology in 1988. From there, Dr. Sholar was accepted into the UNC Chapel Hill School of Dentistry and graduated in 1992. Entering the world as a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS), Dr. Sholar accepted a commission working with the U.S. Public Health Service on the Crow Indian Reservation in Montana. There he worked as Clinical Chief from 1992 to 1996. Dr. Sholar described his experience on the reservation as transformative being that there were no immediate referrals and he treated everything, no matter the issue, that came into the clinic.

After leaving his service in Montana, Dr. Sholar returned to his roots with a family of his own to open what would become Southland Dental Care in 1996. Since then Dr. Sholar has continued his dental education to offer the best dental care to his community. He completed a 9 month residency with Triangle Implant Institute, a 2 week residency with the University of Zurich – Switzerland, and obtained his IV Sedation permits from Western Surgical in San Francisco, California in 2018.

Dr. Sholar and his wife, Fran, have raised three beautiful daughters, Delani, Kati, and Molli Anne in the Pin Hook Community of Wallace, NC. In 2020, Dr. Sholar and Fran became proud grandparents to Amelia Dexlee Sigworth, daughter of Dr. Sholar’s oldest daughter, Delani, and her husband USAF Lt. Jacob Sigworth –together they are stationed in Oklahoma. Dr. Sholar is a member of the Shiloh Baptist Church and remarks that his relationship with Jesus Christ is the most important presence in his life. When not at work, Dr. Sholar spends his time either in the woods hunting, on the water fishing, traveling to see Millie, or enjoying time with his family.
